How the Business Score works

The Blue Collar Banker Business Score is a free educational self-check for contractors and trades business owners. Answer 12 quick questions about how your business actually runs day to day — every question is optional, and you can skip any of them. Your answers are scored right here in your browser; nothing is transmitted or stored.

Your score runs from 0 to 100, built from five categories worth 20 points each. It measures the business practices and conditions you report — not independently verified financial data — and it ends with the three plays that matter most for your business right now.

Making Money 20 pts

Whether the business is profitable, and whether you check what completed jobs actually earn.

Keeping Cash 20 pts

How long your cash could cover essential expenses, and whether you track money coming in and bills going out.

Pricing Jobs 20 pts

Whether your estimates carry materials, labor, equipment, and overhead — and whether you compare estimates to actual costs.

Handling Debt 20 pts

Whether loan and lease payments are comfortable, and whether you know your total monthly debt number. No debt is treated as not applicable — never a weakness.

Ready to Grow 20 pts

How far ahead you can see confirmed work, whether you keep a simple cash plan, and whether you run the numbers before buying equipment or hiring.

Fair by design 0–100

Revenue size never affects your score. Skipped and “Not sure” answers earn no points — skipping can only lower a score, never raise it. A category without enough answers shows “Not enough information” instead of a misleading zero, and a score built on partial answers is flagged as such.

An honest yardstick, not a verdict

The five categories and their equal weights are a teaching framework, not a scientifically validated model of business success. This is not a credit score, a lending decision, or a prediction — it's a coach's snapshot to show you where to look next. Your first question (annual revenue) is context only and never changes your score.
